FAQ

What is CETA?

The Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement is the first commercial trade agreement concluded between the European Union and Canada.

What are the benefits of CETA?

CETA provides Canada with favourable conditions for accessing the European market, including in Poland, via simplified customs procedures which stimulate trade in goods and services. Thanks to CETA, 98% of goods are traded duty-free, and the remainder are subject to progressively reducing customs duties.

CETA also makes it easier for EU companies to participate in Canadian tenders for the supply of goods and services, both at the federal level and in provinces and municipalities. This is a unique opportunity which countries outside the CETA agreement do not enjoy.

Furthermore, the EU and Canada have agreed to mutually recognize conformity assessment certificates for products such as electrical appliances, electronic and radio equipment, toys and measuring devices. As a result, products which are destined for the Canadian market can be certified in Poland, which greatly simplifies the process of introducing products onto the Canadian market.

When did CETA enter into force?

On 30 October 2016, the Council of the EU decided to sign the CETA agreement and to implement it on a provisional basis prior to its ratification by all Member States. Although CETA has still not been ratified by some EU member states (including Poland), its provisional application mechanism allows most of its provisions to be relied upon prior to ratification. After the European Parliament approved CETA on 15 February 2017 and following an exchange of notifications with Canada, most of the its provisions entered into force on 21 September 2017.
