Canada Box | A tool for leveraging ceta to access the canadian market

CETA is the first transatlantic and far-reaching economic
and trade agreement between the European Union and Canada.

98% of the categories of goods will be subject to duty-free trade,
and the customs duties for remaining goods will be gradually reduced
along with the application of simplified customs procedures.

”CETA is the most ambitious and progressive trade agreement Canada and the EU have ever negotiated. This translates into increased profits and market opportunities for businesses of all sizes, on both sides of the Atlantic. The Trade Commissioner Service at the Embassy of Canada, besides providing support to Canadian companies interested by the Polish market is available to support the Polish companies interested in establishing a presence on the Canadian market, one of the most attractive investment destinations in the world.”

Nicolas Lepage,
Counsellor (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner,
Embassy of Canada to Poland

The negotiations of the terms of CETA were concluded in October 2016. On 30 October 2016, the Council of the European Union took a decision on signing of the agreement, and on its provisional application until its ratification by all the Member States of the European Union, which is expected to take place within 2 years.

In practice, the provisional application mechanism means that the ratification of the agreement by all the Member States of the Union is not necessary for the actual application of the majority of CETA provisions. Once the agreement was approved by the European Parliament on 15 February 2017, and the subsequent notification was made by the EU Council to the government of Canada and appropriate legislation was adopted by the Canadian parliament, for the most part, the agreement came into force on 21 September 2017.
